Group Fitness Instructor
The Municipality is looking for an experienced group fitness instructor to run our successful Fitness for Life program running Tuesday and Thursday from 10-11am weekly for the next 5 months.
We are also putting out a call for additional instructors to expand our program offerings in youth, fitness or recreation programming in the Municipality. If you are passionate about fitness or recreation and have a special skill to offer in our community, we hope to hear from you.
The posting will remain open until February 8, but we will be looking to onboard a Fitness for Life Instructor as soon as possible so interviews may begin before the competition closes.

Position Summary
The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for program planning, general safety, and the overall enjoyment of the participants attending the program in a fun and inclusive setting. The individual may be required to work outside of traditional business hours as programs typically take place in the evenings. |
Key Duties and Responsibilities
As a member of the Community Services team, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide a safe, fun and inclusive learning environment for program participants.
- Build rapport and meaningful relationships with participants during programs.
- Ensure instruction areas are clean, free of hazards and are safe to teach in and complete daily inspection of the equipment to ensure all is in place and in good order prior to each session.
- Create lesson plans and execute program activities based on the program goals and outcomes.
- If required, create and maintain a playlist of appropriate music for each class.
- Role model appropriate behaviour and always use appropriate language.
- Be certified and available to provide first aid when needed and fill out all Incident or First Aid reports and provide reports to the supervisor or Health and Safety Advisor as soon as possible.
- Ensure any required certifications to instruct the program are current and valid.
- Communicate with the Booking Coordinator for Sport and Recreation resources, training, equipment replacement, equipment purchases or supplies needed to deliver recreation services in an innovative and developmentally appropriate environment.
- Demonstrate skills and include a variety of progressive exercises that will allow and encourage all fitness levels to participate.
- Promote and maintain positive public relations towards any person or user group that could make use of the facility.
- Bring customer concerns, ideas and suggestions to your supervisor to improve overall program delivery.
- Remain flexible and willing to learn new skills.
- Communicate via email, phone and in person with co-workers and your supervisor.
- Attend staff meetings, training, or planning and evaluation sessions when required.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Friendly, welcoming with strong customer service skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and staff.
- Strong Interpersonal skills and comfortable dealing with new people and new environments.
- Passion for teaching and instructing fitness programming.
- Skill in communicating professionally and effectively with people of various demographics
- Ability to perform all tasks safely in accordance with OH&S regulations and the Municipal Safety Policy
Education and Experience
- Intermediate First Aid with AED.
- Alberta Fitness Leadership Certificate for group fitness (AFLCA) or equivalent.
- One year of experience leading group fitness classes.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check
- Additional certification for specialized fitness or youth programming would be an asset.
