Position Summary  

 

Working under the direction of the Patrol Supervisor, Snow Patrol are responsible for monitoring and reporting on trail conditions, advising on closures and safety signage, and ensuring the health and safety of all guests and staff while using the resort facilities and terrainPatrollers are well-versed in the Mountain Safety program and act as the first responders to emergency situations, accidents, or any other health or safety concerns. This role works cooperatively with other staff and continually strives to provide our guests the finest recreational experience by providing safe and well-maintained terrain and great service. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities  

  1. Monitor and report on trail and weather conditions and advise on run closures / signage.
  2. Ensure adequate signs, ropes, gates and pylons are maintained.
  3. Act as a first responder in emergency or health or safety situations and dispatch resources.
  4. Liaise in emergency situations, communicating with key contacts until the situation is resolved.
  5. Assess the condition of injured parties, administer first aid treatment and transition to emergency personnel if required.
  6. Participate in search and rescue activities.
  7. Maintain required records, reports and documentation necessary as part of the due diligence process
  8. Assist in accident reporting and submission of necessary documentation.
  9. Ensure all guests and staff adhere to established safety procedures and run closures.
  10. Participate in the ongoing development of the emergency procedure & safety program manuals.
  11. Performing trail maintenance as required.
  12. Issue warnings to and/or revoke passes from reckless or irresponsible guests as necessary.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned

  • Previous experience in a safety, patrol, or related outdoors role
  • Advanced skiing/riding ability and comfort accessing all levels of terrain (double black diamond)
  • Previous organized rescue training an asset
  • Calm under pressure
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation, and other legislation regarding the safety of mountain operations an asset

Required Education and Experience

This position requires the following minimum qualifications:

  1. 80 hour first aid course
  2. CPR and AED

The following certifications are an asset:

  1. Instructor certifications - CASI,  CSIA
  2. Coaching Certifications - CFSA, CSC
  3. Guiding certifications - Interpretive Guides Association, Association of Canadian Mountain Guides
  4. More advanced certifications in first aid or Pre Hospital Care
  5. Canadian Avalanche Association Operations Level 1 or higher
  6. Training in risk management
  7. Training in Workplace Health and Safety

Working Conditions

The work is performed mainly outdoors. Outdoor work is performed in all weather conditions, including cold, wind, snow and rain.  The work is occasionally physically strenuous and regularly requires the incumbent to ski/snowboard, bend, kneel, shovel, rake and carry equipment.
