Position Summary

The Mountain Operations Supervisor/Millwright, reports to the Manager of Pass Powderkeg and is responsible for overseeing outdoor mountain operations, all maintenance and care of lifts, snow grooming equipment, small engines, equipment, snow making infrastructure, general infrastructure, buildings, and grounds. This role also supports Pass Pool operations. In performing these duties, the incumbent is responsible for delegating and coordinating work in regard to the above specified equipment, lifts and grounds. 

This role works 40 hours per week with varying shifts including days, weekends and some evenings for snow making and ski hill maintenance and 10-hour day shifts during July and August.

This role includes participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP) a defined benefit plan, health and dental coverage and a health and wellness spending account. All other details can be found in the Collective Agreement between CUPE Local 812 and the Municipality.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees outdoor mountain operations departments including but not limited to snowmaking, grooming, trail maintenance, off-road vehicle maintenance and lift maintenance.
  • Assists in the development of maintenance and operations plans for Pass Powderkeg Ski Area.
  • Fosters a safe work environment through planning work and encouraging safe work practices.
  • Acts as a safe work role model within the organization
  • Prepares staff schedules for the maintenance, trail crew, grooming and snowmaking departments.
  • Supervises and trains maintenance, snowmaking, grooming and lift operations team.
  • Assists with the development of annual and seasonal maintenance budget for passenger ropeways, buildings and vehicles.
  • Monitor inventory of parts, oil, fuel and other supplies and re-order as required.
  • Ensures adherence to all federal and provincial codes related to passenger ropeways.
  • Coordinate contracted services based on scope of work while adhering to all Municipality of Crowsnest Pass policies and procedures.
  • Performs preventative and breakdown maintenance on all off-road vehicles, passenger ropeways and other ski area equipment as required.
  • Prepare maintenance schedules and appropriately allocate work based on time, cost and benefits.
  • Regularly inspects ski area facilities to determine problems and necessary maintenance
  • Adhere to industry quality standards for maintenance and operations on all equipment, ropeways and facilities.
  • Work with the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass staff team to complete repairs and preventative maintenance as per policy and procedure.
  • Coordinates staff based on work plan, sets objectives based on attainable goals while adhering to tight timelines in inclement weather.
  • Diagnoses mechanical issues and corrects them according to best practices.
  • Creates seasonal snowmaking operational plan based on budget, equipment and weather
  • Executes snowmaking plan according to weather, available resources and other factors to achieve goals and deadlines set by the Manager of Pass Powderkeg.
  • Oversees the design and development of a safe, feasible terrain park in conjunction with the Millwright of Pass Powderkeg.
  • Coordinates all grooming operation from snowmaking through to end of season tear down.
  • Train, mentor and guide staff to ensures safe operation of all off road vehicles.
  • Creates guidelines, standard operating procedures and safe operating procedures for snowmaking, grooming, trail maintenance, lift operations and maintenance.
  • Ensures all equipment is in safe working order prior to use.
  • Plans, organizes, and assists with Pass Powderkeg Ski Area capital projects.
  • Ensure completion of any safety checks or bulletins directed from regulatory bodies
  • Respond to afterhours call outs regarding ski area equipment.
  • Document breakdown and preventative maintenance measures.
  • Monitor ski area access road, parking lot and slopes and ensure maintenance is complete prior to opening.
  • Coordinate summer trail maintenance and groundskeeping.
  • Maintain snowmaking equipment and weld and repair small holes in snowmaking infrastructure.
  • Able to perform welding and fabrication jobs necessary for maintenance of Ski Area equipment, mechanical assets and property.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques and use of the materials, tools and equipment of the applicable trade and attend industry training applicable to the job as per budget.
  • Able to maintain a preventative maintenance program for a diverse set of equipment and machines.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices for a diverse machinery and equipment fleet
  • Able to troubleshoot complex mechanical problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral, to allow communication with operators, staff, contractors, suppliers and guests.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment and to perform duties at a high degree of quality, timeliness and precision.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques and the use of materials, tools and equipment of the applicable trade
  • Ability to maintain a preventative maintenance program for a diverse machinery and equipment fleet.
  • Knowledge of the safe work practices associated with machinery maintenance.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot complex mechanical problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, to allow communication with ski employees. 
  • Ability to use the tools of the trade including diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to use welding equipment, lathe and milling machine.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a team environment and to adapt to a demanding and dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to interpret, implement, and adhere to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform the duties listed above to a high degree of quality, timeliness and precision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel).

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of High School Diploma.
  • Certified journeyperson status as either Millwright.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Drivers License.
  • Must have two years of ski area maintenance experience.
  • Must have a minimum of two years of supervision experience in an outdoor or maintenance-based environment
  • Working knowledge of CSA Z-98 and AEDARSA regulations and codes.

The following qualifications are an asset:

  • Ski area maintenance experience
  • Ski Resort Operations and Management program or courses.
  • Selkirk College Course Lift SROM151 – Surface Ropeway Lifts or equivalent.
  • Experience with the following Ski Area Departments: snow school, ski resort rentals, retail, lift operations, food and beverage, snowmaking, grooming and maintenance.
  • Pool Operator I Certification

Contacts:

Internal: Frequent contact with ski area employees in all departments regarding instructing, interpreting, teaching on maintenance, repairs and vehicle operations.  Contacts include instructing users on operations, information sharing, supervision of staff. Interacts accordingly with MCNP staff regarding Pass Powderkeg operations.

External: Regular contact with guests is expected as is contact with suppliers and regulatory bodies. Interacts and provides guidance to contractors regarding maintenance and special projects and ski area improvements.

Supervision:

Supervisory responsibilities and providing advice are a regular part of the job which includes planning, assigning, and reviewing the work of those supervised, or involve the regular giving of advice or direction to others without supervisory authority.

Working Conditions:

The work will frequently require the employee to work at heights, near moving mechanical parts, near high voltage electricity and in outside, inclement weather conditions.  The employee will be regularly be exposed to cold, hot, wet and/or humid conditions, dirt, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15kgs.  The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy. Provide own set of basic hand tools to perform maintenance (specialized tools provided by Ski Area).
